GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE

Akron-Canton-Youngstown bureau established

by Martha Pontoni

The Gay People's Chronicle has now established a new Akron-Canton news bureau to serve those lesbians and gays living south of Cleveland in Wooster, Akron, Kent, Canton and Youngstown. The bureau is in response to a meeting held at the Chronicle offices in January and will be based in Akron. Ted Wammes will be acting bureau chief until a permanent replacement can be assigned to the position.

The bureau was formed to help spotlight the activities and businesses in the AkronCanton area. The area has long had the reputation of not having an organized les-

bian and gay community, but since this is now changing, the Chronicle is stepping forward to help facilitate communications for the people of the area.

The aim of the bureau is to get more information about the region out to those who need to know. Entertainment, AIDS, the March on Washington are all areas of news that need to be reported. AkronCanton news and information will be included in the Chronicle's regular format with a special byline indicating that the information is from that region. Events and activities will be listed in the Calendar and advertisers from that area will be listed in the Resource Directory.

March on Washington group formed in Akron

by Martha Pontoni Akron-Canton bureau

"The March is only the beginning" promises the members of Committee '93 Akron-Canton, a new organization whose purpose is to first make sure that the March on Washington in April has a strong Akron representation, and then move on the other organizational needs in the area. The group's members are committed to "networking and mobilizing individuals and groups, and

raising funds so we can act upon issues which affect our community." Their hope is after the March to really address issues in the area and form a more organized community.

The group is new and is looking for more input from lesbians and people of color. They meet every 5th, 15th and 25th of the month at 7 pm at the Emmanual Fellowship Church in Akron. Everyone is welcome to the meetings. To contact someone from Committee '93 call 434-5551 or 478-0208.

"I know we have a hard job ahead of us," said Wammes, "but it is important for our community to communicate with each other. The Chronicle is a good vehicle for process." Wammes is looking for new points of distribution, calendar events, and writers to cover the activities in the area. "There is a lot more going on than people know and we are going to get it all in one place so everyone can see that.”

Besides Wammes, Jerry Kaiser, Paul Schwitzgebel, Richard Simonton and Heather Steenrod will be helping with the bureau. More help is needed, of course and those interested in being a reporter or sales rep should call the bureau office at 9236926 or the Chronicle, 1-621-5280 to volunteer. There will be a bureau meeting in Akron on February 27. Please call for details.

A hearty welcome to our Akron-Canton reporters!
